| ARTIST STATEMENT: Alex W. McDonell |

I do that most of the time. I don't mean I'm actually thinking about painting or framing a piece of art. Well, I might be thinking of that, but what I really mean is, I'm thinking about art as a way of being. I believe that in order to be a great artist you must become art itself. In this regard I practice the ZEN principle, "Be what you do." Art can be mowing the grass, making your bed or driving in traffic. It can be anything you do, say or think as long as you focus on what you are doing and think of it as your art. You know the old sayings "art imitates life" and "life imitates art." Well, I disagree with those statements. Life and art are the same. Making art is like breathing, I would die if I suddenly stopped. Practicing art comes natural to me, it can be automatic or it can be controlled. Art keeps me alive and well by flowing through me and I am thankful for it everyday. I hope your thinking about art right now. |
